Designability is a national charity that uses engineers’ expertise and knowledge to enhance people’s lives and have transformed over 250,000 lives in 48 years. Experts with a passion for creating life-changing assistive technologies conduct original research and develop easy-to-use products that meet real needs and provide solutions to real life situations. One such product is a children’s powered wheelchair called Wizzybug. In 2011 they set-up the Wizzybug Loan Scheme which provides children under 5 with a free, powered Wizzybug wheelchair, thus addressing the problem of limited NHS funding for powered wheelchairs for young children. Wizzybugs are customised for children who have conditions such as cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, spina bifida and muscular dystrophy. The only real eligibility criteria is that they go to children who could benefit from increased mobility and who can also demonstrate some independent control. These amazing machines create fun and offer children the chance to explore indoors and outdoors whilst developing movement skills, independence and the chance to play with their peers. Around 100 families come to collect a Wizzybug each year from the Designability centre in Bath. The BWCF have made various donations to the charity since 2006 and have recently awarded a further three-year grant to help provide a Wizzybug to any child who could benefit.
